Combat feels balanced on both Action and Hard difficulties.+ Very accessible for the genre. It doesn’t feel too hard and is a good mix between Ninja Gaiden combat and Soulsborne elements.- While the music is pretty good, it’s hard to hear it. There is some sort of audio mixing issue where the music feels very quiet but the battle music is loud and overpowers everything. Would be nice to have this fixed and the option to turn the battle music off due to the OST not really being appreciated.- Story starts off pretty bad and it takes 75% of the game actually to go anywhere.- The level design is lacking and it needs a mini map, especially in some few but annoying later dungeons.- Graphics are PS3/Xbox 360 levels of dated with awful frame pacing in ‘Resolution mode’ for the Xbox Series X.This is a game that has gotten better with time. Strangers of Paradise had a rough launch, especially on PC but I decided to pick it up on Xbox Series X to give it a second chance and I’m glad I did. It didn’t do anything for the graphics but it did balance the game’s difficulty so it’s no longer as frustrating and now can be beaten on Action difficulty without too much frustration but it still left me with a challenge most of the time.All and all, if you held off on it and don’t mind some rough edges, such as level design that made you wish they had the foresight to put a mini-map and some graphical issues with frame pacing on resolution mode, or just a jagged edge filled mess on performance mode, it is a good game that I can recommend, just know that it could’ve been better considering who was behind it, but if you like Final Fantasy and combat that is familiar with the Soulsborne genre and other action games like Ninja Gaiden you’ll probably like it. The plot is a bit cringe in the first 8 or so hours but it does get surprisingly better in the final few hours. It’s also on sale quite often so I’d say for the price it’s well worth the price of admission. It could use a few more updates but as of now, it is a good time, just not a great time.

The job system has some good customization to it, you can equip 2 jobs/builds and swap between them seamlessly even during combos which ended up being more interesting than I though it would be.Unfortunately everything else is a mess. The characters are horrible, the main character Jack is edge lord incarnate, there is a scene where he actually says "whatever" puts in his headphones and walks away from a conversation. The rest of the cast don't even have recognizable personalities, just generic carboard cutouts. The story is amazingly bad, the entire plot is just "kill CHAOS" which is the ambiguous darkness that is trying to consume everything, blah blah you've heard it before.The level design is just a series of menus where you select missions, no overworld or hub world just menus and cutscenes. The graphics also aren't anything special, looks like a ps3 game in some areas and even on performance mode I still got framerate dips during cutscenes.If you like souls games/nioh you might get some enjoyment out of the job system and combat but do not pay full price for this, just rent it or wait for a sale.

The multiple references to FF1 (at least the Dawn & Soul version of GBA) with the map, the script, the names, the locations, the dialogues, the prophecy, the villains (The 4 elemental demons Litch, Marilith, Kraken, Tiamat and Garland/Chaos), Princess Sara, Astos the elf prince, the Levi stone, Cornelia, Elfeim, Mount Kolts... even some references to Chronodia, everyone is there, everyone was invited. The skill tree and the way to unlock jobs more similar to an MMORPGThe badThe graphics are not consistent (there are spectacular and well-designed parts and others on the side that are poorly done or the textures are very basic). The more “realistic” character designs are more generic and look like something out of a Neverwinter, Bless Unleashed or FFXIV type MMORPG. Dungeons are very dark not only in the light sense but also in the dark sense. Just because you don't see the mini map but actually the dungeons are interconnected corridors (and here they don't make drama like with FFXIII). Cities exist but they are anecdotal. The story is told with flashbacks and events as a mission (before the adventure there is a chat menu to talk with villagers and guards about mission topics and certain impressions of the trip and sometimes they give clues. You have to level a lot, the dungeons they have a minimum party level to deal with (so you will have to go over and over and over and over and over the same dungeon from top to bottom and left to right doing side quests to level up and go to the next dungeon). If you omit this number and enter with a lower level, it is certain that you will die many times and you will be frustrated. The plot/script is anecdotal coming from a game that improves the plot of the NES FF1 that is non-existent and from a bygone era of videogames where this item was non-existent, even taking the GBA FF1 Down and Soul script as a reference, but there are many freedoms, coincidences, conveniences and plot-twists that take you out of the story.The Meh!:Jack alias "Mr Revenge against chaos" only thinks about that and apparently he has nothing better to do, his Line-motive is sad, I don't believe that this violent and hateful guy is destined to be "the Warrior of the Light” of the FF1 or the one that appears in Dissidia, because of his hatred he seems more like a Warrior of Darkness. Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a title that although it is not the best spin-off of the saga, it is a breath of fresh air, brazen and hooligan in the purest Jojos style that offers new mechanics quite good for the franchise, highlighting above all its combat. You “talk” to NPCs through MENU OPTIONS from a map in-between stages. This is cheaply made and sold at the same price as an actual AAA game. It should be $29.99 at most. DO NOT ruin Final Fantasy by turning it into another Nioh / Dark Souls / Returnal rip off. Don’t be fooled– the increased “challenge” is only so they don’t need to add more content for you to progress to. I should have known better when I saw it was Team Ninja.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is undoubtedly a fun chaotic romp that will delight number crunchers and action RPG aficionados. Even though I found the characters and some of the story lacking, I still had a really good time testing out new jobs, exploring the various levels, seeing all the easter eggs, and devising strategies to tackle the level bosses. I’m looking forward to grinding gear with friends and finding out what the future holds with this new spinoff series of Final Fantasy.

Stranger of Paradise is a lot of fun, so long as the player takes on Jack's mindset, and only focuses on killing Chaos and doesn't think too hard about anything else.
